Many people are put off using real nappies by the preconception of soaking, boil washes and long drying times. However the reality is that the care of cloth nappies is now very simple and takes very little time or effort.
Prior To Use:
Before you first use your cloth nappies you should wash them to break down the natural coatings on the fibres and increase absorbancy. Ideally they should be washed between three and six times, there is no need to dry the nappies between each wash. Do not use fabric conditioner as this coats the fibres and will reduce your nappy’s absorbacncy.
What To Do With Soiled and Wet Nappies:
If you are using a flushable nappy liner then this can be tipped into the toilet. If you have decided against using liners then any solids can still be emptied into the toilet by shaking the nappy, this is easier as you baby starts to ween and their stools become more solid. Then just place your nappy in a nappy bin and wait until you have enough nappies for a load of washing. There is no need to soak the nappies if you plan to wash frequently, however if you intended to store your soiled nappies for over 48 hours it may be preferable to soak them. You may wish to use a commercially available nappy soak, however a few drops of tea tree oil in your nappy bucket full of water will be just as effective due to the antibacterial properties of the oil and is much cheaper.
Washing Your Nappies:
When you have a full load of soiled nappies just empty your nappy bucket into your washing machine, using a nappy net will prevent you having to handle the soiled nappies again. All the nappies sold on this site have washing instructions included in their description, it is not nessesary to wash your nappies on a temperature higher than 60ºC. I would recommend a non biological washing powder and an extra rinse cycle to help prevent powder residue on your nappies that an cause irritation to sensitive newborn skin. Again, do not use a fabric conditioner as it will coat the fibres, reducing the absorbancy of your nappies and may irritate your baby’s skin. If you live in a hard water area and would like to soften your nappies, add a tablespoon of vinegar to the final rinse.
Drying Your Nappies:
Line drying is the most economical and environmentally friendly option, however we don’t always have the most reliable weather for this to be a permanent option in the U.K. Some slim nappies such as terry squares, prefolds and slim fitting shaped two part nappies will dry quickly if hung to dry indoors. All the nappies sold on this site are suitable for tumble drying and have details of recommended heat settings in their descriptions. When tumble drying nappies your drying time can be reduced by placing a dry towel in with your load of wet nappies.
Care of Nappy Wraps:
More care needs to be taken with laundering nappy wraps. Most wraps are better washed at a lower temperature and dried in air to prolong their life. Wool wraps need specific care, handwash with wool soap and then treat with lanolin to re waterproof the wrap. Wool wraps do not need washing after every use as airing will allow the wrap to refresh itself and any small stains can be spot treated.
